Sure, but what does screen give you for emacs that dtach does not? Here, I use
alias demacs='dtach -A '~'/demacs emacs -nw'
Instead of -A (attach || create+attach) you can use -n (create+detach), but my emacs sometimes asks me questions I want to answer on startup :-)
I suppose you also know 'emacsclient -t' which opens up emacs in your terminal, giving you a vi-like kick-start.

Thanks for the tip, Andreas. That may actually be useful to me, but at a different time.

The reason for running Emacs in a screen session is not to use Emacs inside screen, but to get the process running in a daemon mode (as opposed to running as a window or normal xterm, which I might accidentally close). As far as I know, it's not possible to run Emacs without a user interface, even if I don't need that particular interface.

You might want to run emacs in a dtach session instead of a screen one. Especially keys are treated a lot better then, if I recall correctly.

No syntax error here, I simply get the usage text. I'm removing the redirect in case any one runs into the same problem.

Hummm... perhaps it only works because you are not causing that 'if' clause to be executed. If you try running preload_emacs without any parameters, you'll see the syntax error.

Anyway, I don't think the 'bug' is very important since it doesn't disrupt normal operation of the script. I was only mentioning it for completitude.

That is odd about the input redirect. I'm not even sure why the redirect is even there, it's just an echo statement. It was the same way in the original script I took it from. At any rate, it works as is for me.

Thanks for dropping by!

Sorry about my previous message, the forum software mistook some characters form HTML commands. What I was trying to say is that, in line 18, the "less than" character must be changed to a "greater than" to specify output rathen than input.

I found your scripts very useful (thanks a lot) but I think there's a mistake at line 18 of preload_emacs:

    echo "Usage: preload_emacs []" []" >&2
